While many patients may have heard of fillings and crowns, not many may be aware of inlays and onlays. The dentists at Sunridge Dental Clinic may recommend inlays and onlays when more than half the tooth’s chewing surface is damaged.

Who Needs Inlays and Onlays?

Like other dental restorations, inlays and onlays come in a range of materials like porcelain, gold, and composite resin. Our dentists in Calgary, AB will first assess the damage and recommend the most suitable material for your requirement.

While an inlay is used to fill the cavity inside the tooth, an onlay is a more substantial restoration used to cover the tooth’s cusp tips. Inlays and onlays may be fabricated to suit different sizes and shapes, depending on whether they need to cover one or more cusps of the tooth.

If you have a severely damaged tooth or a large cavity, please feel free to call our office to learn more about inlays and onlays.

Inlays and Onlays Procedure at Sunridge Dental Clinic

It usually requires two appointments to complete the procedure to place inlays or onlays. During the first visit, the dentist will remove the decayed material or damaged filling from the tooth.

We will then take impressions of the size and shape of the tooth and these to a dental lab to fabricate the inlays and onlays. The dentist will then apply some temporary sealant to protect the cavity.

Once the restoration is ready, one of our dentists will place the inlay or onlay on the tooth, cement it in place and polish it for a smooth finish. Please call us for more information on inlays and onlays near you.

Why Consider Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are known to increase the tooth’s integrity by as much as 75% as they are fastened with high-strength resins. With proper hygiene practices, inlays and onlays can last anywhere between 15 to 30 years.

Our dentists will check the inlay or onlay for fit and comfort during dental checkups. Contact our expert at Sunridge Dental Clinic to learn more about dental restorative options.
